infibulation

Definition

1. In primitive societies, the partial stitching, clamping, or wiring together of the foreskin of the penis (the preputial orifice) or lips of the vulva to prevent sexual intercourse leaving a small opening for urination. The ritual usually included cutting off the inner lips (or labia minora) and stitching together the outer lips (or labia majora). Male infibulation also made erection painful and masturbation impossible.
