turn in the barrel
Definition
(Expression) being forced to do something unpleasant because it is only fair to share an unpleasant task for which everyone must take a turn; derived from a dirty joke Derived from a smut joke told in the military about new recruits without the company of women who enjoy the practice of inserting their private part through a hole in the side of a barrel where they then feel wonderful things only to learn later that they must take their own turn in the barrel. The phrase came to mean being forced to do something unpleasant or extremely distasteful because it is only fair to share the unpleasant task for which everyone must take their turn.
The term has also spread to the legal and business world where it might mean giving a difficult deposition or undergoing an audit for which the outcomes are not expected to be good.
Usage: The colonel said, "I'm not putting my men at the front of this column. It would be suicide!" The general responded, "Your men are the best rested and the best equipped. It's their turn in the barrel".
