triticism

(Noun) (tri' ti kism) an apparently trite, commonplace or hackneyed saying, expression, etc., but one that holds within the germ of an idea or concept that is on closer examination quite profound. This definition conceivably originates in or derives from the word triticale, (a hybrid produced by crossing wheat with rye), which comes from triticum, the genus name of wheat, implying the association of a grain of wheat which upon expansion could become a field of wheat.Usage: His observations, advice, and admonitions were expressed in old saws, aphorisms, maxims, or platitudes, but were in fact better described as triticisms, i.e., practice what you preach, a reference to hypocrisy.
