A 19 th century metaphor for a woman who has had sex with a man. In Renaissance literature, according to James T. Henke, Courtesans and Cuckolds. A Glossary of Renaissance Dramatic Bawdy (1979) when a woman ' shot him between wind and water '-- (1) To have copulated with;
-- (2) To have infected with a venereal disease.'
