mackerel snapper
Definition
(Noun) (Slang, somewhat passe.) A Roman Catholic. Perjorative and/or humorous reference derived from the former ban (ended 1966) on Catholics eating meat on Fridays.Usage: To say "mackerel snapper" of someone who doesn't eat fish seems counterintuitive to me, but I must admit that the first time an Indianan (humorously) used the phrase on me, an inveterate New Yorker, I instantly knew its meaning.
