It is divided into the Australian Capital Territory (capital city Canberra), New South Wales (main city Sydney), Victoria (main city Melbourne), Queensland (main city Darwin), Western Australia (main city Perth) and Tasmania, which is actually a large island off the coast of the main continent. Perth is separated from the other cities by the vast Australian desert, known colloquially as the "outback". Australia is also famous for such landmarks as Uluru (Ayer's Rock) and the Great Barrier Reef which is visible from space.
