zoophilia
Definition
Psychological term for:1. Erotic love for animals.
2. Sexual excitement or arousal from fondling or caressing animals, from observing their sexual activities, and from a fetish based on animal furs or skins.
3. Oral or genital sexual relations with farm animals or household pets (excluding goldfishes, porcupines and skunks).
4. Psychosexual disorder in which sexuoerotic excitement and gratification are dependent on the persistent and preferred or exclusive use of animals. A distinction is sometimes made between bestiality, a sexual act with animals, and zoophilia, sexual arousal from contacts with animals. Zoophilia is a paraphilia of the stigmatic/eligibilic type. In 1948, Kinsey reported that 17% of American farm males acknowledged sexual experience with animals and +/- 8% of males and +/- 4% of females had sexual contact with animals at least once in their lives. Occasional oral or genital contacts with an animal during adolescence is part of sexual experimentation and exploration and rarely leads to long-term zoophilia.
