toxic shock syndrome

Or: TSS , a rare, potentially life-threatening, bacterial-caused (Staphylococcus aureus bacterium) illness occurring mostly in menstruating women who are using superabsorbent tampons. First reported in 1980 TSS occurs more often during menstruation and in women between ages 15 and 24; it affects only about 1 out of every 1.5 million women who have periods.
