thousand-yard stare

Definition

thousand-yard stare rate
(Noun) The unfocused stare of traumatized people - as if they were looking at nothing, or at least something a thousand yards away. Originally used to describe military personnel traumatized by the horrors of fierce combat - but the usage has broadened to describe more commonplace events.
Usage: Iwo Jima combatants often had a thousand-year stare, but much more prosaically, a person might feign a "thousand-yard stare" to pretend not to notice someone he/she doesn't want to notice.
