telomere
Definition
(Noun) Protective DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes that gradually shorten as cells divide. Think of a telomere like a shoelace cap. If you can keep your shoelace cap from not fraying and falling off, you'll always have a good shoelace. If the cap falls off, soon you'll have to buy a new shoelace. The same goes for your telomeres. If you can do everything to protect your telomeres, you have a good chance to live a long and productive life.
