Definition
Or: cul-de-sac / cul-de-sac of Douglas / Douglas cul-de-sac / rectouterine pouch / rectouterine excavation , a blind pouch or sac located at the bottom of a woman's abdominal cavity between the uterus and rectum. Inflammation in this area from pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or endometriosis can cause pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia); it is through the cul-de-sac that culdocentesis and culdoscopy are performed.
