incunabula
Definitions
(Noun) 1. extant copies of books produced in the earliest stages (before 1501) of printing from movable type.2. the earliest stages or first traces of anything.
(Noun) A book PRINTED (THAT'S the key; i.e., not lettered by hand) before 1/1/1501 - generally agreed to be 50 years or so.
Usage: A Gutenberg Bible is often seen as the incunabulum of incunabula - though earlier such books (not extant but I believe also called incunabula) were printed.
