hackney
Definition
Or: hack , obsolete, 18 th century, British term for a prostitute, derived from the standard meaning of a horse or mount that is for rent. Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary of the English Language (1755): ' To hack, to hackney: to turn hackney or prostitute.' A hackester , according to James T. Henke in Courtesans and Cuckolds. A Glossary of Renaissance Dramatic Bawdy (1979), was: ' a whore's hired protector.' See prostitute for synonyms.
