Definition

fore-and-aft rate
(Noun) Obsolete. A bicorn military hat worn by senior military officers (usually admirals) with "beaks" at the front ("fore") and back ("aft").
Usage: The Duke of Wellington wore a fore-and-aft hat in combat. Napoleon's hat was just the opposite. Sherlock Holmes's cap, a deerstalker, happened to be a fore-and-aft one.
