A class of women (known as demimondaine) of doubtful reputation and sexual virtue who haunted the twilight zone of Parisian cafés and music-halls during Victorian times (1880-1900) providing companionship and excitement for business men and men of society without engaging in prostitution.
2. A more respectable word for women prostitutes collectively.
