Definition
Italian borrowing for a young male or choirboy castrated in boyhood, whose adult voice is that of a soprano, usually ranging two octaves or more above middle C. (A castraro retains his penis.) Plural: castrati.Etymology: From the Latin castrare , to castrate; first recorded in English in 1763.
