black letter

Definition

black letter rate
(Adjective) (Legal) Statutory law, as opposed to case law.
Usage: Although both black letter law and case law are printed in black ink, the distinction is a convenient one. E.g., black letter law has many authors thinking long and hard (in most cases), whereas case law has a single author - whose opinions formally called such are individualistic and occasionally inexplicable.
