A big group of ships, usually banded together for some purposeUsage: The D-Day invasion was spearheaded by a huge armada.
(Noun) Technically, just any fleet, but to avoid images of the 1588 Spanish Armada jumping to mind unbidden, perhaps load the word with context to make it blindingly obvious that you're talking about some other fleet.
Usage: About 50 years ago, Garrett Mattingly's The Armada was published. No elaboration was necessary.
