abscisic acid (ABA)
Definition
sesquiterpene plant hormone first discovered through its promotion of leaf senescence and leaf fall, but whose major functions are in adaptation of plants to environmental stresses such as drought. It induces stomatal closure and synthesis of proteins that proteins that protect against the effects of dessication. It is also involved in the maintenance of dormancy in seeds and buds.
