Vatican roulette
Definition
Jocular American epithet, first recorded in 1962, for the rhythm method of birth control (which consists in avoiding intercourse during the presumed period of ovulation): Vatican refers to the Catholic doctrine forbiding the use of artificial methods of contraception; roulette refers to the high risks for pregnancy when using this method of contraception.
