Urethra Gauge
Definition
(Noun) A medical device used by a nurse to measure the circumference of the urethra for the purpose of selecting the appropriate size indwelling urinary catheter for that patient prior to urinary catheterization and to reduce/prevent catheter associated urinary tract infections and reduce/prevent urethral trauma.Usage: The Doctor ordered the nurse to place a foley catheter. The nurse used the urethra gauge on Mr. Smith and found his urethra to be a 12.5 French opening, The nurse selected a 12.5 French Indwelling urinary catheter and placed the urinary catheter in Mr. Smith. Clear yellow urine drained, the patient tolerated the procedure, no complaints of pain.
