Exact or apocryphal, "All I want from life is to be known as the greatest hitter who ever lived" captures his ballplaying excellence, his arrogance, his "I don't care what people think about me" manner ... .
Usage: Ted Williams had a terrible reputation among fans and sportswriters. He was known for spitting in the direction of fans, acknowledging their applause (because "The Splendid Splinter" was indeed excellent), being entirely left off at least one sportswriter's "Top Ten" list for his attitude alone ... .
