Spuyten Duyvil
Definition
(Noun) (From the Dutch; New Yorkers never call it anything else.)(1) A short, treacherous riverine waterway ("Spitting Devil," "The Devil's Whirlpool," and "In Spite of the Devil" as a mnemonic) separating Manhattan from the Bronx.
(2) The Southern Bronx district just North and West of the waterway.
Usage: Circle Line sightseeing boats go up the East River and down the Hudson, instead of doing it the other way around for a much more dramatic effect, because Spuyten Duyvil is so hard to navigate east-west - why make it worse?
