Silastic
Definition
Trade name of the first silicone gel bag for breast implants marketed by Dow Corning in 1962. By 1973, more than 50,000 gel bags had been implanted (many of which were leaking). In 1978, Dow Corning introduced a water-based, hydrophilic, nontoxic prosthesis. The FDA banned silicone implants in April 1992 after the manufacturers failed to prove they were safe. After many large lawsuits, Dow Corning filed for bankruptcy in May 1995.
