(Noun) (1856-1951. Petain: accent acute over the "e".) French Field Marshal/hero (WWI), Head of State/traitor (WWII).

Usage: General De Gaulle, as French Head of State, commuted Petain's 1945 high treason death sentence to life imprisonment. Pierre Laval (1883-1946), Petain's Prime Minister, never the Savior of his country as Petain arguably was, apparently didn't seem to think his own firing squad would shoot. It did.
