Operation Barbarossa

Definition

Operation Barbarossa rate
(Noun) The Nazi codename for their 1941 attack on the Soviet Union, then technically an ally.
Usage: Although "Operation Barbarossa" obviously evokes the German medieval emperor so-nicknamed - who did invade Russia -
so many other things happened during Barbarossa's reign that the connection isn't immediately obvious.
