Old Hickory
Definition
(Noun) Nickname for Andrew Jackson, early 19th-century American president.Usage: Jackson was called "Old Hickory" presumably because he was rough-hewn and tough, unlike his six predecessors as President - all members of the Virginia or Massachusetts aristocracy. (John Quincy Adams was tough and crusty - but urbane enough.)
