(1) Abbreviation for "manuscript."(2) The title for an adult woman whose married state is unknown, or who happens to prefer "Ms." to denote her independence, individuality or something similar.
Usage: Sometimes, "Ms." as a woman's title isn't followed by a period - because, after all, since it doesn't stand for a longer word, it isn't technically an abbreviation.
