L'esprit de l'escalier
Definition
(Noun) Literally "the wit of the stair," this AWESOME phrase describes the comebacks we all have as we walk away from the situation where they should have been delivered--hence the "stair." Learn it. Use it. Become enviable.Usage: I couldn't think of a good comeback at the time, but l'esprit de l'escalier was, "scratching could not make it worse, an'twere such a face as yours were (Much Ado About Nothing, Act I Scene 1)."
