Know Nothing
Definition
(Adjective) Noun or adjective, depending upon use. A loosely-affiliated American political movement of the 1840s and 1850s, forthrightly nativist, but thought to be bigoted and prone to violence as well. So called because its members, when asked their political principles, knew nothing or answered in vague generalities.Today, both generic and specific.
Usage: "Gangs of New York," the movie, focused on the Know Nothing/Irish "wars," and to a lesser extent the dysfunction between the Know Nothings and New York City's government.
