Harriman, W. Averell

Definition

Harriman, W. Averell rate
(Noun) Fabulously rich man (1891-1996; inherited wealth which he added to); sportsman, private banker, venture capitalist, Ambassador, Cabinet Member, NYS Governor, diplomat, philanthropist. "The King of the Democrats" and one of "The Wise Men" - leading lights of Post-War international relations.
Usage: Harriman was known as "the Crocodile" because he tended to be somnolent during meetings until some hapless speaker said something he objected to - "SNAP!": the Crocodile had clamped his jaws on someone. Seen as humorless - but actually very funny sometimes: "My French is excellent except for the verbs."
