H.L. Mencken
Definition
(Noun) (1880-1956) Erudite, knowledgeable writer/journalist. Famous throughout America 1915-1935, but, always a curmudgeon and cynic, he became increasingly irritable so as the years went on. A bad 1948 stroke effectively ended his influence.Usage: H.L. Mencken, on the Baltimore Sun's Board of Directors, once asked to see his pre-prepared obituary in that paper's morgue. It described Mencken's crustiness, and everyone feared his reaction. In the margin he had written "As he got older he got worse" - period.
