Earhart, Amelia
Definition
(Noun) Famous 1897-1937(?) American aviatrix. First woman to fly the Atlantic non-stop solo. Disappeared, probably near tiny Howland Island in the Pacific while trying a multi-stage circumnavigation of the globe. "Lady Lindy": a reference to Charles "Lucky Lindy" Lindbergh - because of her fame in aviation and her appearance: tall, tousled, good-looking, slightly minatory.Usage: Theories about what happened to Amelia Earhart continue to the present. The likeliest and most prosaic is that she was lost when her plane crashed and sank. The most dramatic is that she was deliberately overflying and photographing Japanese-mandated islands which were widely thought to be being fortified - in violation of international law: she crash-landed, and the Japanese executed her. A futile exercise: "Turning on the landing lights for Amelia Earhart".
