Battle Hymn of the Republic

Definition

Battle Hymn of the Republic rate
(Noun) (Originally American Civil War but now a regular part of the American musical repertoire.) The unofficial National Anthem of the Union: heroic, stirring - and filled with the self-righteous certainty that God was a Northerner.
Usage: "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is such inspired music that it was specified by Winston Churchill to be sung at his funeral - and Johnny Cash (a Southerner) said it was sung by both sides. Well, maybe the music - not the words!
