Balls-up

Definition

Balls-up rate
(Expression) Marine descriptive slang deriving from International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea: 1969; Rule 30, d, ii.
"A Vessel Aground shall exhibit ....... where it can best be seen (the visual signal) Three Balls in a Vertical Line."
Usage: It is generally unwise for a ship to be run aground , so the term 'Balls-up' succinctly describes such a vessel, showing the appropriate visual signal and implies poor Seamanship.
