Or: BV , abbreviation for bacterial vaginosis, a common vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria gardnerella. Bacterial vaginosis can spread through vaginal sex, but it also occurs in +/- 15% of females who have never had sex. TREATMENT: The most common treatment is oral metronidazole (Flagyl). This drug is very risky for pregnant women and should not be taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy.
